Hi everyone, just wondering if its possible to run a nano with only the live rock for filtration, a sponge filter, and I can chemically filtrate my tank via my skimmer which has a slot for Carbon bags, I do a 20% water change every week, I do this that way I have no nutrient buildups, as we all know is our enemy!!!,,just seeing if this is possible, I dont see why not concsidering the U series has minimal biological filtration in it compared to the 20+ pounds of rock, also a sponge filter would be much easier to clean then pulling out cartridges, also the skimmer top comes off easy for the carbon to be placed in, any thoughts, and any suggestions would be great, no fug or sump also, thx everyone!!! :)

So it's completely possible then?, I mean I'm always on top of cleaning the filters and tank maintenance, just want a better look without harming the tank, I don't know if I would have any room for a mangrove, would this matter?

I ran my nano (linked in my signature) pretty much the entire time with no filtration. Just water changes that were from my waste water from my DT water changes.

I have an 8 gallon nano tank that I use for my frags. There is 3-4 pieces of live rock in it, one hermit crab, 2 snails and a blue damsel fish. Just running a small Fluval filter with foam and some media from my Eheim canister filter in it.
One gallon water change weekly...that's it! Everything is doing great!

Should I maybe up my water change % if removing this bit of filtration, maybe 25% every week, not sure on the outcome of running it with the filter for so long..

I personally have found that my nano does better when doing a series of smaller water changes more frequently. I perform a 2 liter water change every two to three days. I scoop water out of the nano, pour it down the drain. Then I fill the nano with water from my main system and top up my main system with new water.

I had thought of switching both tanks to reef crystals but changing over roughly 200 gals won't be a cheap venture, didn't realize or think that I could mix them, thanks for the tip Eric..
p.s. just bought a new pail of IO salt yesterday..
