I have a 15 Gallon Rubbermaid tub that I have as back up emergency water and was just wondering how long water will sit around and still be safe for use. It's stagnant with the lid on but am a little hesitant to use it if I did have an emergency.

It would matter most if the container was sterilized before water storage.

RODI has no or very little chlorine or chlorimine in it. So if there's any bacteria that was in the container before will only multiply.

As long as the container was sterilized before water storage. I don't see any problem with holding emergency water in it.

Even if it is stagnant with no aeration? What type of chemical do you suggest using for sterilization? Vinegar?

I currently have two 40g rubbermaid brutes acting as reservoirs on the output side of my RO system. My old system had one 40g rubbermaid brute. I only had issues with growth after 4-6 months of zero use. I suppose it would depend heavily on the area that the backup water is being stored in and the cleanliness of any hands and equipment that comes in contact with the backup water.

hmm interesting. It's been sitting around for about a month in the basement with the lid on and doesn't have any smell or film or any type of growth that I can see. Would most likely be unnoticeable if anything was in there though. Wouldn't be good if I did have an emergency and then refilled the tank with tainted water.
