Hypothetically of coarse...if some very nice family member brought home some sand dollars off of a beach somewhere and gave them to me thinking they would be great tank decorations and knowing that I would enjoy them...how dangerous is it to tank them. RO/DI for a few weeks first? They were only sun bleeched/dryed.

Hypothetically of coarse...I wouldn't want to do anything illegal  :?

Nothing illegal about bringing back dead sand dollars or even coral skeletons that im aware of.  I brought a nice sized shell back from Panama and dropped it right in the tank.  No issues.

As far as legal issues go, I imagine it will depend on where you collected them from......I would bet that it is actually prohibited to take them from the beach but I doubt many people would really care.
If you want to be safe, you know the answer is clean them well and rinse well with rodi.....you never know what could be on them....

When I went to Cancun I brought back a few coral skeletons I had found on the beach. Customs let it slide but told me I could get shit cuz they don't know if I collected them alive and let them die. You could clearly see sand erosion on them but eh customs likes to flex there bicepts. Anyways this year we brought me kids and my son collected a ton of conch shells and I figured they wouldn't bother a kid which they didn't even say a word but they can. At least this is out of mexico. Anyways I don't think I would personally just drop them in could have residual sunscreen or who knows what on them.

Big difference between removing coral from a protected reef and cleaning up the beach of a few dead coral skeletons :)
