That's pretty funny. He will definitely vote for trump. The generator way isn't too costly tho. Not sure about the auto turn on but to get a 500$ generator that runs your whole house would be nice. I lost power for three days last year and was running extension cords everywhere. Pita

How much gas did you use for 3 days worth of gennie power? I used to use Honda 6500 for commercial use daily and we'd go thru 5gals in a 10hr shift. That's a lot of gas can to keep full and readily available.

That's all fine and dandy if you are home to set it all up and run. But what if you're away when all hell breaks loose? Isn't that why you'd want automation, so you'd never have to worry.

I have both my son and son by law trained for this, it doesn't hurt that they are both electricians either.

And that's what I'm getting at. My parents house is set up to run part of the house off a gennie back up unit, gas so they need to pull a breaker, plug in and start gennie and keep it running.

If you want perfect situation you need gas fitter, electricians, ect. It's not a cheap deal to be done right.

This is a simple method, hydro will usually do the disconnect for free and if you use a licensed electrician you don't need a permit. Takes about 1/2 hour to install. You can do it yourself if you get a permit.

With a 40 ft cord it's about $1000.

A 5000w generator should be adequate. While Honda are by far the best a cheap one will probably suffice for emergencies. I went through about half that gas but a couple trips to the gas station is better then three days in the dark

The initial cost maybe slightly higher than a generator. But after you have one it charges by solar panels and uses the sun. You can then use it to run your entire house and charge you car. It's very quiet in comparison and no need to go haul gas to it and the smell, mess not to mention the cost. There is no moving parts so the breakage or servicing factor isn't a worry.

But the real reason to get one is to show off and isn't that really what life is all about? Am I right?

$3K for 2000 watts plus installation is way over 10x what I paid for my 6500 watt generator, and I have to haul gas for the lawnmower anyway.
