Skimmer to loud

Hey guys this octopus 150 is to loud for the living room area the noise is coming from the silencer has any one modified there silencer  Please help

my silencer has a foam insert,if it wasnt in there it would drive one nuts listening to it

just buy a skimmer with a dc pump  ..nice and quiet

i dont think it is the pump that is whats making the noise

is it just water coming out f the output thats making the noise?  if yes can yu not get a elbow to let the water output deeper in sump?

they said the silencer so i assume its on the air intake above the waterline

My silencer has two holes in the top end. I plugged one and partially plugged the second one with those black plastic screws that seem to pile up when you buy pumps and skimmers and whatnot. Even with most of the intakes covered it runs perfectly and dead silent.

dont you worry about decreased performance because of reduced air flow?

If you saw the crap that thing pulls, you would know that I do not worry


Seriously, it pulls a fraction of the air that those openings could provide. Maybe a MUCH bigger pump also uses the same silencer.

ahh i see, that video larry posted above with the pill bottle silencer looks like it would restrict airflow and hurt performance. i was just curious because its probably the loudest noise coming from my tank also, i just live with it.. sounds like a thai hooker in the dark... lol

Mine has a pill bottle type thing, but the air intake to the pump is a third hole in the bottle, the other two are just open holes basically. 

That mother is loud when the holes are fully open.  In fact, I think it's more a loudener than an silencer.

i don't see how they make noise…..duke said my light fans are the ones making the most noise in my whole system

I could do a vid... they make a TON of noise without some sort of muffler on the muffler.

Covering the holes on my reef octopus doesn't change loudness a all. There is no noise I can really hear coming from the silencer. My system is not quite by any means.

Jerry.  Did yours not have another hose that attached to the top of the silencer?  Mine did.  Without it it was very noisy.  I never understood where there other hose went too. Lol.  I just zip tied it to my plumbing.

Thanks for all the ideas I put some cotton in the silencer and  finally it's so nice no more wife bitching lol jerry it if u plug the out let's it's no noise lol
