The only thing I woudl say with the cotton would be to watch for insane mould growth.  Nice moist spot for spores to go nuts.  Just keep an eye on it and swap it out every so often.

If you have, I would extend each hole with a 5-6 inches of silicone tubing ( or air tubing).
