If you got space for the 5000sss I would go for it. I find DC pumps on skimmers semi useless. (Other then being quite)

I run my skimmers full power, don't see a need to lower the power.

*this is just my opinion. I have never used a DC skimmer.

and the feed mode right

Feed mode is nice, but my controller does that.

Soft start up, I just setup a delay. Soft start I supposed to "save" the pump...but that from what I have read didn't help any gen 1 DC pumps as most had problems. (They are definitely way better now)

Yeah it can monitor your temp, ph, and other things. It can control your heater and stop your tank from overheating or getting too cold. You can have it if your tank hits a certain temp itll kick your lights off to stop it from getting to hot. You can have it send you alerts to your cell. You can monitor stuff from your cell anywhere in the world if you have it set up properly. Lots of different capabilities, endless! :)

Controllers are one of those things that if you've never had one, you don't see the need for it. But if you've ever had one, you would never run another tank without one.

Even something as simple and basic ad a digital aquatics lite controller is better than nothing IMO. By the time you factor the cost of all those timers and power bars. You're not far off from a basic controller.

I love my Apex and would not switch to another controller. Best money I spent on my tank. There are cheaper ones out there, I reviewed both Apex and DA forums before deciding so that I had an idea of issues and programming as well as the quality of support. Apex blew DA out of the water for support, which was a BIG part of my purchase. The release of Fusion has made Apex even easier for the general user as well.
