Sps bleaching

Some of my sps is bleaching and i cant understand why, my calcium is at 460 was low but its at 460 now, and sps jus started bleaching? I dont get why im having a tough time with sps? Could be that i had my halids one different everyday because of the heat? didnt want to over heat the tank?

there are many more parameters than calcium that need to be tested for us to give you any pointers.

thanks teebone, I was in a big rush when I posted my first message.

How long have you had the sps? any changes in your tank like lighting or anything like that? where in the tank are the sps that are bleaching? what is the temp of your tank?

Mag and alk are right on, My temp goes up n down from a 24 hour spand. It goes from 78 to 82. The sps is on the top off my reef? i added another powerhead aswell. Change isn't good??

check all the electronics in your water (pumps, powerheads, heaters)

make sure none of them are corroding into the tank. sometimes a seal will go or a crack will form and you have exposed metal in the tank.  if your temps are slowly climbing and slowly dropping then it shouldnt be an issue. Natural reefs have much larger temp swings and do fine for the most part.

Ya il check heater and pumps and powerheads but equipment is fairly new.

to much light or not enough light,corals are turning white?? I got two 250 single ended halids and 48" reefbright straight blue.    My lights shut off if it gets above 82

general rule of thumb - browning = not enough light or bad water quality - bleaching = too much light/salinity outside of normal ranges.

key thing is that those are just general rules - we need more tank info (size, light schedule and placement,  filtration system) to rule out a bunch of causes.

are these sps new additions? how long have they been in the spot they are sitting in the tank? if they are somewhat new, chances are is you are not acclimating them to you lighting enouph. start them low...in few weeks time move them up closer to the light..

Vince got it pretty much. Brown is usually not enough light or too many nutrients (NO3/PO4) and bleaching is too much light, high temps, not enough nutrients or improper light acclimation.

On major thing I always have to ask is if we are talking about bleaching or Tissue Recession/loss (RTN/STN).  Many people mix these up and there is a big difference.

My saintly is 26 the coral has been in the tank for about 2 3 months. My temp was a bit high from that hot whether we had. My halides were gettin shut off early do to temp. Halides where on for 3-7 hours but i keep my 48 inch reefbright on for 12 hours.

they would brown out if there wasnt enought light....so that isnt the issue but they may have become used to the shorter photo period - you may need to slowly ramp up lighting and re-acclimate.


by 26 you mean 1.026 right?
