wow that sucks bro with that much algae its prob consuming a crap ton of no3 everyday probably almost 10 ppm based on my fuge consumption rate. the worst part is once algae develops a thick mat like that it traps a ton of detritus against the rock creating constant nutrients and making it impossible to fix without huge swings.
unfortunately its almost impossible to correct naturally once at that state if you ever did get it cleaned your nasties will sky rocket and kill everything. Qt and save what you can would be what i would do. The amount of spores and stuff givin off by all that algae is for sure the cause.
Personally i hate nuking the rock if you remove from light and heat and just put it in a vat with no wc it will all die off then remove rinse with freshwater and vat in freshwater that will kill off the spores and rinse it really well tgen vat with salt water and cure it. I find this works better as it removes nutrients from the rock instead of trapping stuff deep inside the pores. Has worked well for rock i get from others. And only takes about 1.5 months. I find people who nuke rock with acid always develop algae issues again after a few months. Not always but alot of times.
