What is the best sump size for my new 220. I'll be putting the skimmer and return pump external. I'd love to have a refugium for the new tank. Advice appreciated

there will be a lot of room. My current stand has 32" of clearance inside. With a 30" tall tank I just have to be careful of the ceiling lmao. (Light rack)

Ok so think about this, you put a 30" tall tank in there, now for what ever reason you want to remove your skimmer, like a full blown cleaning, it's a monster skimmer, will it fit between top of sump and lowest part of the door frame?

I think he meant his dt will be 30" tall, so have to make sure stand is short enough to allow room for tank and lights to fit before hitting ceiling.

Yes. My DT is 30" tall. My skimmer is external with this new arrangement and will be in one of the side cabinets along with the waste container.

In regards to a sump, jam the biggest damn thing you can in there WITHOUT sacrificing maneuverability. Being able to take everything out EASILY is the key.

Do not pigeon hole yourself during the build. Make sure you have an escape route that is easy.

If one or more components are to fail such as the sump itself, you need to be able to access everything quickly and easily. Always leave yourself an out.

The side cabinets will be removeable with a few screws. The sump will fit through the side of the stand so that, as you said, if it fails I can get it out of there. Other then that there won't be any equipment in there other than filter socks and a couple heaters. I realized what really annoyed me about my current build and am avoiding those issues like the plague!!!!
