Sump Question...

So my main display tank dosnt have a sump and isn't drilled. Has a hob skimmer and cannister filer. I have a marineland cannister filter not being used in storage. Can I just use the input and out put line's and pump for the filter to move water down to a sump and back to the DT with out drilling??? In my mind it seems like it will work but I'm sure I'm missing something that will not let it work lol

That won't work for a sump.

In a canister filter. It's sealed. So what water comes down goes back up at the same flow rate. With an open sump, there's not way to balance the two correctly.

Your options for running a sump is either a hang on back overflow or drilling the dt.
All my systems run off hob overflows. If you're ever in my area. You're welcome to come by and I'll show you how the whole system works

That would be great if I could check it out. What do you think the price would be for overflow, pumps and everything I need?

Hob overflow box: 50.00 - 150.00 (new)
return pump: 50.00 - 150.00 (new)
Sump: 50.00 if you just use an appropriately sized standard aquarium (used)
miscellaneous plumbing parts: 50.00

Not knowing how big your display is and how big of a hob overflow you need and return pump is the variables. You should be able to get all the necessary parts for a few hundred bucks, and even cheaper if you can find used stuff, but finding a used hob overflow box is going to be uncommon, as not many people run them.

If there is anyway possible to drill your tank, that would be the best without a question. A good hob overflow box will be about the cost of drilling your tank with bulkheads I bet. Logistics is the only issue there.

Remember, hobs CAN overflow and cause floods. Not common, but still a risk. With a properly drilled tank with the matching sump, there should be next to no worries of flooding.

Yep.

I sold my 180 gallon tank because it wasn't drilled, and then went with a 220!

nothing wrong with hob overflows thats all i have ever used am going drilled now just to eliminate any shadow from box but what size is your tank i have my dual j pipe overflow box good up to 1600 gph i think is the aqueon one come by for that coral and we can talk it over.... will definately save you cash and already has clear vinyl pipe for going down to sump

I drilled mine when switching from my old canister filter.. Definitely worth while IMO. I had two guys help me and we did a full tank tear down, clean, drill and back up in probably 6 hours.
