Riley check that the water return is thread tight thru the bulk head. Need to Teflon tape it so that it's not leaking water past and keeping siphon going. Try to remove as much water as possible to just have pump under water and full system running, including skimmer, then shut off system and see if you still over flow sump. If you do we will need to figure out how to get more water into your drain zone. I have a couple ideas but still working them out in my head.

I drill a small hole just at the water line on my return pipes and put a cable tie around it to stop the water from shooting out. It still stops any siphon and it doesn't effect flow into the tank. If the power shuts off it kills my back siphon right away and i get minimal flow back into my sump. Works like a charm for years now with no issues.

I do the same and tank only drains to bottom or weirs on overflow just keep an eye out that nothing plugs it like algae or snails

Thats what i was kinda thinking. I have a check valve on the retrn but its an old used one, and its not working lol. The return siphon is really the biggest issue.
Sorry and yes i have 2 baffles i had to remove one yesterday in hopes of lowering the water level in the first compartment to allow more water.

Coming in a little late in the discussion but have you tried strategically drilling a hole in your return pvc just below the max waterline of the display? This serves the same purpose as a check valve as it breaks any siphon that is formed the moment the water level drops below the hole. For myself I drilled the hole above the waterline and used some ro tubing to deflect the stream downwards which eliminated the noise and breaks the siphon the exact second that power is lost.

this is my return for a non drilled tank but same idea the hole is just a touch lower than where my water line was 20150220_102045.jpg

Riley try to flex the locline enough so that the head of one of the tubes is either just below the surface or actually above it pointing down. I'd rather not drill the locline itself. I do have other pieces I can let you try until yours comes in, single sided piece. If you don't have it figured out I can come over this weekend again and help, out.

Mag pumps are noisy for sure, A sump that won't hold all your water is a wet floor, I put a one way valve on my drain in an earlier set up and it worked pretty good.

If I come up with a better solution for a pump then my jebao I just bought it will be up for sale. Make due with the mag for now. Like I said I have a couple ideas for your sump and I think with just a little tweaking we can make it right

I ran a mag 18 when the sump was underneath and it was pretty darn quiet.

I run a mag 24 now in the basement for the return, a mag 18 for my reactor manifold, and a mag 12 on my water change station and all three are amazing.

And for the water temperature issue that people bring up, I have my water at a stable 79-80 degrees, if anything all it does is take load off of my heaters. It never increases my water temp to the point where it is ever over 80 degrees....

Yeah im pretty sure i fixed the noise issue, theres still a slight humming sounds but nothing that will annoy me. It was because my skimmer and return were crammed into one chamber and rubbing against eachother. So i took the sump out rotated it(since the skimmer will only fit in the chamber) and separated them, not quite sure why i didnt think of that earlier.
