I have decided to go with another cabinet for the 75 gal mixed reef tank, the size will be 48" x 18" x 39/40", right now I am using a 30 gal sump. I am not happy with that sump and I want to go the biggest that I can but not sure what size to go, any thoughts or suggestions...my skimmer is a Bubble Magus Curve 7 so I won't be needing a new/bigger one, thank god..

Create a list of what is important to you (do you prefer to run a refugium, do you prefer to have extra liverock in the sump, will your heater fit etc). If you can find a pre-built that meets your list without compromise then grab it, otherwise go custom. If custom is too pricey I would just grab as big an aquarium as you can fit in the stand and diy the rest.

One important aspect that is sometimes overlooked is the depth in the skimmer area, you want to make sure that the depth is equal to the skimmer manufacturer recommendation (or deeper - you can always build a stand to elevate the skimmer but the opposite is much more difficult.

I'll have a nice 90gal sump up for grabs come mid winter. Once the baby clowns are big enough to actually catch I'm going to transfer into the 110 sump I have waiting my sump has 4 sections, one being a refugium of the one end.

It's a standard size 90 so 4' x 18" and 21or24" tall?

The babies are still too small to tell, just little swimmers in the sump I'd guess a couple dz anyways.

that is wonderful, wish I didn't have so many clowns now, I have always wanted the black ones...this is too funny, the sump will be bigger than the tank..

Not always a bad thing.

Mine is. I've got the 90 with a 40 live rock box all for my 75 upstairs. And I want to go bigger in the sump. I look at my sump as an extra tank that doesn't have to look all purty and stuff

I would like to do a refuge this time round, checking out you tube and found a sump the way that I want it and I think I can tackle that job..

When designing a sump. Decide what equipment is going into it and design around that. And you'll be plenty happy. 90gal or bigger for a sump is what I'd recommend if you want a fuge that's large enough to actually make a difference. Also watch your water flow through the fuge area. Too fast and it's not going to do squat for water quality

thanks, this sump is going to be a totally different design, found one on you tube that I think will work. The skimmer will be going in the first chamber with over and under flow and over for flow and the fuge will be the second chamber and finally the return chamber. The guy also added a shelf going into the fuge where he had carbon socks so that all the flow ran through it..really neat design and it made sense to me..it means a total redo of the plumbing but that's ok because there were mistakes made when I did it the first time..down the road I would like to add some sticks and a clam so this will give me the chance to do it properly..

I have a similar design with baffles. Works almost too well as you know my nutrient levels in my tank.

You're welcome to come by and have a look before you do your final design. Sometimes seeing things in action in person makes a world of difference rather than just a video online

Also have an acrylic sump I'm not using. Not sure on size of equipment. But it's 3'x18'x16' tall approx. 3 chambers one is 6x22 next is 12x18 and last is 9x22. All measurements approx.

I did have it running as a self contained frag tank at one time but now needs a real good cleanup.
