Tang Alternative For 40 Gallons Tank

What's alternative out there for Tang that look and behave like them (like to graze and swim), but smaller in size so I can keep in 40 gallons tank?

It will probably nip some corals. It is a risk. Some people don't think they do enough damage while others report that they killed their prized coral. Tangs, also nip corals, especially as they get older/larger, but we don't hear as much about hat for some reason.

not sure, I have had one in 125g for about 1.5yr now and he hasn't grown or changed colours... love his colour and I'm hoping that he doesn't change..right now he is 3 to 4"..check out the mimic tang, I don't think that they get that big...but could be wrong..

sorry they do get to a fair size..

Multi colored angel is not reef safe bud... it will nip at coral and requires at least 70 gallons.... this fish gets a max of 3.5 inches but keep in mind for an angel fish it's not always the size... it's the amount of room they need to swim around... angels are a very busy fish and need lots of room to swim around.

I am going to get flame angelfish ot tahitian flame angelfish. Do they just nips SPS polyps? I read that they don't bother softies and LPS?

No angelfish is 100% reef safe. In a matter of fact, any fish can become a coral nipper. The Genicanthus genus is considered the reef safe group of angels.

I've had a mimic tang for over a year in my 40 gallon maybe grew 1/2" if that . Never had a issue

I've saw baby blue hippo tangs in tons of nano tanks. For a while I thought they had a Pygmy species

haha how true this is. I have 3 azure damsels and one of them completely tore apart a colony of...not entirely sure what it was but it was like green star polyp only burgundy with bright green centres. It was in his territory and he was cleaning up the area and I guess they bothered him. I watched him pick at the polyps and tear them off the rock one by one. I'm sure he wasn't eating it, just clearing space.
As far as I am concerned azures and any other damsel are completely reef safe and had the coral been anywhere else in the tank he would have left it alone. Also if any other coral had been in that space he would have done the same to it. I'm not allowed to put new frags in his space...he throws them across the tank the little b*stard! lol
