Tank Storage

Should be getting a 90g tank tonight. Given my 6ft tank is still running, and the fact I still have to build a stand for it, I have nowhere to store it other than my unheated garage. Probably won’t have a stand built until the spring. Is there any risk to the tank leaving it in the cold all winter?

I have also stored tanks in cold. That being said sont bring it inside after being on the cold. I made that mistake on my 90 gallon wavefront and cracked center brace and trim from the thermal shock.

Seems my new build is starting much sooner than originally planned. I’ve heard stories of tanks cracking after being stored outside, then brought in and filled too soon. How long should I leave it empty once inside my house?

It depends on how hot the water you are putting in the tank is. I used to have tanks outside in my shop full of native fish and gars over winter. The water in the tank reached temps just shy of freezing. My neighbor used to have 6 10ftx3ft aquariums outside in his shop as well. His tanks would hold trout from the pond. Some days a thin layer of ice was on the surface. No problems in the 12 years I’ve had them out there.

You could fill the tank immediately if you used the coldest water that comes out of your tap. I personally would wait until the glass feels like it’s at room temperature before filling. Shouldn’t take long, few hours

Unless there is a major temperature difference, it should not be an issue. If it is -40 outside, I would not put room temp or boiling water right in it. Especially if it is thicker glass. Just let it sit and get to room temp if you are concerned. It would only take an hour or less to get to room temp even at extreme low outside temperatures.
