To Qt....or Not Qt...

QT should have no substrate or live rock as calcium carbonate interferes with many medications? Where gobies are resistant to many parasites they still can carry them??
The Watchman/pistol pair will be going into my 220 before the tangs arrive....my qt has no live rock and only has maybe a cup of substrate for the pistol shrimp which I will remove when the pair leaves qt.

The fluval is perfect...it should run in your sump and be moved to the QT when you are ready to hold something. Then cleaned out completely and returned to your sump when the QT is empty.
Yes that is the plan :)

BTW .Regarding the PBT...

Remember not all white spots are caused by ich they can just indicate a skin irritation. I had one for years that kept getting spots that never spread to anything else. I eventually realized he broke out whenever I used a frozen food that contained gelatin. Some sort of allergy...like hives...

Along those lines, I have a 20G Qt and run Marine Pure balls in my Sump. When I have been setting up my QT I move 4 balls over and replace them with 4, and run an aquaclear HOB filter. Aside from my first time with it (where as you mentioned, I did have an ammonia issue), it's seemed to work quite well. Have I simply been lucky, or is there logic to my limited experience approach?

As for OP's question, I've had many similar thoughts regarding stress in QT procedures outweighing it's benefits. My view has come to be that it depends where the fish has come from. How long it was was and it's tank conditions. I actually just grabbed 2 yellow, and 3 hippo tangs from BigShow's place. They came from a 1.026 salinity tank, had been there for a fair bit of time, weren't treated with anything, and looked super healthy. I dripped them for temp acclimation, and in they went. Guess we will see in a few days. Alternatively, I bought a Naso from Big Als, and some Anthias before that, and they went right into QT for 3 weeks.

something else to consider is how do you acclimate and what other fish do you have in the tank.. sometimes I use my QT but, depending where they come from determines if its needed.. I drip mine for hours and just before they go into the tank I feed my tank (heavy) and feed the new fish, that way you know if they are eating without being harrassed.. when they go into the tank, the lights go off and the tank is wrapped and stays black for min 24 hrs.. its kind of over board but, it works for me...I have 5 tangs in my tank...
