On A rebuilding year I would go with a veteran for one year and run with one of the AHL goalies. Paying him $5 million a year says he's better than Halak from the Islanders or dubnyk from Minn. I don't think he's better then both those goalies at this point of his career.

If only it worked like that. So you clearly don't get him at 3M. So, beyond that, what is your next play for a goalie?

Cash is irrelevant. The Leafs have it.

The hopeless Habs saw exactly what happens when you either have or don't have, a rock solid goaltender in net, and the leafs aren't as fast, skilled, or talented as the habs, so they need a better goalie than even Price in net. This danish white elephant isn't that guy. Bernier might have been the guy if he had decent D in front of him the whole time (the one thing I have seen improved in Toronto was the defense, much tighter towards the end of the year). The leafs need to be able to almost put 4 forwards on the ice, and not have to worry about losing the puck and having to drop back. Most of their forwards are simply terrible defensive players (name one that is good at hustling back after the play), so they need an absolute ROCK in net, and a very solid backup. Who knows, maybe I'm wrong about this Anderson guy (I won't know until next January), but I honestly don't think so.

I am not one to follow basic stats, and much prefer advanced stats, and many other factors, but here is your example.

ANA 43 37 22 9 0 7 1,086 88 2.30 998 .919 3 2,298

NYI 36 36 18 13 0 4 984 80 2.30 904 .919 3 2,092

By the numbers, they are virtually a dead heat. Anderson has 6" on Halak, and is 5 years younger. Just entering prime years for a goalie. Tons of upswing.

As I have mentioned before, they got him for next to nothing. The money doesn't matter when cap space isn't an issue. Not sure why no one gets that? He sits average middle of the league in contract value. If they bring him over and don't sign him he becomes a UFA after next year so what is the point?

More to that. I see some people playing Arm Chair Quarterback, but offering nothing else. My biggest gripe with Leafs haters. You tell me what the other options are out there for goaltenders at the moment. Keep in mind current and future cap space, and what is needed to possibly get them. If things don't pan out. Dropping a 5M contract is nothing. Having said that. I think he is going to surprise many people this season. We can always defer back to these posts come mid season! ;)

Oh yeah. That magical unicorn that does not exist. Where is this mythical goalie you speak of? Maybe we can turn back time while we are at it and Gretzky can be 22 again and play for the Leafs. Might as well call that an equal reality.

I seriously would like to see them work through the draft for about a decade, free up enough cash and/or picks to put real talent on the first, second and maybe third lines...you know, that funny thing called depth, instead of blowing money because "there's lots". Babcock understands building through the draft, but he doesn't have the time left in Toronto to see it through properly. I forsee a team that might make the first round of the playoffs in a year or 3, but never have the depth to go deep. When was the last time they made the cup finals? Back when there was only how many teams?

I'm not a hater, I just see them for what they are. They are the WWE of hockey. All show and flair but no substance. I'd like to be proven wrong, but doubt it in my lifetime.

Well they kept the pick and picked who they said they would. Kind of disappointing no block buster multi player deals

I thought the Habs were going to dump Pk Subban get Pierre-Luc Dubois

Lucky for them, cause they were looking to trade up to 4th place where it was expected Dubois was gonna go. Can you imagine they trade up, then BOOM, he is gone in the 3rd spot anyways.

So what the scoop on this Kerby Rychel that the leafs traded the blue jackets for then with their 2nd pick chose this Yegor Korshkov ? Another winger it's like they are trying to assemble a scoring line for their new 1st over all centre.

Harrington wasn't going anywhere, an d a 5th round pick so who cares. Could maybe pan out, but likely a 3rd/4th line winger who can mix it up a bit. There is some potential for him to break out, and he's on the cheap for 2 years to see how it goes. Decent pick up without loosing anything really.

So Rumor has it that the Leafs have a plan, that has been vetted by the league and lawyers, that essentially guarantees Stamkos 3.5M in endorsement benefits. This according to Bob McCowan. From evidently very reliable sources. Almost saying it is virtually a done deal. Consider the Sabers are rumored to be willing to go 12M, and the Leafs approx cap space of about 9M, this puts things in line. Add that Stamkos recently built a home in Aurora, his parents live here, and he grew up in the GTA and things are looking pretty interesting here.

i read that rumour somewhere to but thats a classic case of cap circumvention... it seems to obvious of a loop hole for the league to allow. as it sets a dangerous precedent for any team with cash, as they can simply get any player they want for cheap and pay them a fortune " under the table" (endorsement contracts).

ive also liked stamkos but i worry hes to 'old' for the rebuilding team for that much cash. not sure- i wish management would shine some light on their ideas.

I think if they are going to rebuild do it the right way. A championship team will not happen over night.

I bet the new Ace's team in Vegas gets a cup before the leafs :)

Stamkos signs with TB. For 8.5M over 8 years? This seems far too low. He met today in Toronto with ownership and the CEO of Canadian Tire, and other companies. Why would those guys be there? Signs right under Leaf cap space? All too convenient. I still see a sign and trade, and a convenient endorsement bringing him to the 12M range.

I guess the deal was he could sign a 8 year deal only with TB all other clubs only a 7 year deal.

So the speculation was TB would sign and then trade him for a bag of pucks, so they get something

Correct. So who knows. Maybe still that's the plan. 8.5M is a low number. Stamkos meeting with these companies with MLSE today, and his agents saying it's important he be the highest paid player in the NHL, then this? Something is off. Guess a few days will tell the whole story. More to it, or he REALLY wanted to stay in Tampa cause he took a pay cut to do it. Also why wait all this time to sign for a number like that? Makes no sense.

Looks like he has said he is there, and not moving. I am sure his agents aren't happy. They were wanting him to make the highest salary. Clearly it's a thing for those guys to set benchmarks. Tampa clearly wasn't budging, and I am guessing the delaying all this time was simply in a hope that Tampa would up the cash at the last minute. Clearly the bluff didn't work. He went so far as to visit Buffalo, and Toronto for god sakes when clearly he had no intention. There is the tax break there, but aside from that, he clearly likes it.

Personally, I've moved on. Stamkos is dead to me.

The End.
