UV sterilizers... do you need one to have a successful reef? If so how many watts would you need?

Re: Question of the day- July 10th

My brother runs one.  Some say that it can help kill free floating ich and stuff.  All depends on the size of the light, dwell time are the light.  So flow. Different things take varying amount of exposure to kill... Ich is on the higher end of it.  It will kill algae spores, free floating copepods and stuff.  But in the end it is not a needed thing in my opinion.
Could it help with ich and parasites.. yes.  100% effective.. not even cloth.

I looked into running a uv sterilizerer at one point but after a little bit of reading found it was not needed and can potentially kill off alot of good stuff along with the bad so I never did use one , I think  a majority of us reefers dont use one I would think .

I know that people who breed clowns or any fish for that matter use them on there broodstock tanks , not everyone but some people do , Im sure the fry are more suspectable to diseases and what not and this would be why you might see them more on those types of set-ups rather then reef systems .

I do not have one, but if I did, I would run it in my top up and/or water change water. Never in my actual tank. They do kill off a lot of bacteria etc etc, would be nice to know that your new water is just that new.

If you take the amount iof bacteria that floats around and dies because of it and compare it to the overall population in the tank/Rock.  I woudl bet that its less than .5%.  That is one aspect that did not concern me at all when I was lookign into them for an ICH cure.
