I test quite regularly for phosphate, I do run the TDS meter in the buckets too, I have found the salt buckets don't seem to leech anything (well the IO ones anyway).  I test the white rubbermaid tub too once in a while just because I worry it will break down over time.

I've said before, the water I used to keep in a blue brute rubbermaid bin was leeching ~100 ppm of phosphates into the makeup water (!).

This topic comes up again and again. I think we should put together a more scientific test this fall. Get a clear plastic pail, a clean aquarium, a brute, a few diff 5 gal pails, a few TDS meters and maybe a a few heaters, and chart the numbers under controlled conditions.

I use the brute garbage pail. Just tested it and got 3ppm tds.
Ive tested it before and always got 0. This is the first time i ever got a reading.
But i also may have slightly contaminated it with setting up the new tank.
I ended up using some tap water when i ran out of rodi water and the same water bucket was used back and forth.

I came across this article a while ago and it has some interesting things to say about phosphates we add to the aquarium (about food but there is a little on RODI water): http://www.advancedaquarist.com/2012/3/chemistry
Now hes talking about 0.05ppm in his RODI example so if you have something in the range of ~100ppm like salty then this may be of no help.

Also I would think that the manufacturers of powerheads/pumps wouldn't give a :poop: about if their plastics leech a little and did you every use that pump for mixing salt (or in a tank) in the past, maybe that's your answer right there? (<-- I have no clue, I'm just throwing out suggestions  ;D)
