I've never had any nuisance algae to date in my tank.. I picked up a show piece of corals/rock from a fellow reefer.. 2 Weeks later ive got some kind of algae growing on it..

I don't want to infect the rest of my tank with this.. However the mille and cap are fully encrusted..

Help!

My tang would not touch the hair algea until I started to rip it out manually I'm thinking it created fresh growth and then they all started in on it till it was gone.

It's contained to 1 rock.. The new one only.. Kinda freaking out.. Don't want to risk infecting my whole tank.. To date I've had no nuisance algae or pests

Try reaching in, picking off and manually removing as much as possible, throw it out don't let it float around, put it back in front and centre away from everything else leave for a few days and see if anything nips at it. Feed a bit less then normal to force your tank to graze on it.

The rock is full of nutrients. Your tank will likely absorb them out. You also have a different setup than the person it came from. Something you are feeding, is fuelling the algae growth.

Just keep picking it off. Personally, i let it grow out a bit. The algae will use up the nutrients faster than out filtration deals with it.

If you are not running gfo, perhaps a small amount would help.

I do run gfo and am preparing water for a water change today... Whatever is feeding it, I'll starve it! Like i said, no other issues in the tank with algae... I'm not about to start now!

This works - add some flow should clear it up

Strangely enough... 24 hrs after posting this.. The green is turning brown and shrinking.. Looks like my system and filtration is doing its job.. I'll still do a water change tomorrow... And refresh the gfo.. Just as a precaution
