check with the London Aquarium Society.
I have never been to one of their meetings, but i know that they have an auction every year and rent a hall for a day.  Im sure someone on the exec or BOD would be willing to help.
I am on the BOD for KWAS so i will ask around here as to who to talk to.

I don't know how helpful they may be.  Seems like -literally- an old boys club.  Their meetings are in a sort of dumpy part of town, in a public school.  I think we could do better.

Buddy will know, or know who I can call to find out.  At least then we will know if a city facility is even in the cards or not.

I think rick already mentioned the next one was going to be in a rented hall or something like that.  You might want to check with him...of course there can always be more than one  :)

I think its a great idea Pat. Let me know what I can do!! If properly planned an event like this could turn out to be huge. I know that the interest is defiantly there.

You can count on me in I'll be buying and selling  :).

Yes, the staff and I have already talked about planning our next local frag swap. The date will be sometime this spring and will be looking at renting a hall in Chatham (which is central for the majority of our members). We will officially announce this event once we figure out some of the larger details (soon).

Rick.  With the intent that this thing gets off the ground would you consider just using this bigger swap instead?  The idea would be to make one large event.....even get some dry goods sellers.  I cool little event for eveyone in the area.  I would hate for competing events to draw people away into smaller groups.

That is the whole point of London as the central location.  I also feel that this event should be late spring/early summer......as soon as practical.

I did enjoy the "garage dweller atmosphere" of our last shin-dig however, if we can swing something in London I am sure it will draw more peeps east from us. There's got to be somewhere that we could get for free, and operations should be minimal.

Another consideration would be to organize LFS booths. Maybe for a small fee we could invite our LFS (BA's, IA, SLC) to set up booths with their livestock and dry goods? Depending on our participant reach, we could consider other LFS or manufacturers in Ontario? This could help address any expenses and assist with room rental costs, etc.

And who knows.. maybe invite an A-List Speaker, like Mr.SaltwaterTank ;)

Also take a look at the vendors who participated at the recent MACNA, and contact them to see if they would be interested in supporting our regional fragswap? You may be suprised at what they would send us for door prizes, raffles, etc.

Just a few ideas to think about :)

Hmm...I have access to a fairly large conference area at my association (for free), if someone wants to look at the area and determine if it would suffice I will look into asking for its use, its in the lower level so stairs might be an issue.  The main level is a licensed lounge, alcohol is cheap!

thats the ticket! most small businessess really like that sort of stuff , doesnt have to be limited to lfs. eg: water specialists, tank builders, cabnet builders, plastics supplyers.  any small buisness that could contribute to our hobby and gain a new custy base for theirs. like a small fair. and who dosent like hot dogs. it could catch on... time to start fragging.

I like this.

I've fired off a txt to my buddy, no reply yet but I don't usually hear from him until around lunch time.  However big conference room and licenced lounge (open to public?) sound awesome.

Okay I'm meeting him for lunch.  He's never priced out anything in town, but he might have an idea what places would work, or maybe something we're not thinking about.

** he is finding out costs, but said the city has a lot of rules and regs.  He said if someone is possibly offering up space, why not look into that, and I think he's right.  However, he will let me know who to call to get pricing and rules.
