Big Sump Problems

So as some of you may of seen in the for sale thread I up and grabbed parksy's 120 gal and he was nice enough to throw in an acrylic sump he had. Thanks again parksy! :)
It does have a crack on the drilled hole, so i'll have to patch that and learn me some acrylic welding (planned on internal return anyways) but the problem at hand is there is only one possible way to get this sump in the stand and that's by turning it on its side and going through the top of the stand.
So my question is, should I have a sump in my stand that cannot be removed without draining and removing the tank? Is their any likely circumstances where an acrylic sump would need to be removed?
I know I've seen sumps maxed for size in stands before, just trying to gauge your guys opinions.

i can see that being quite the job should the need aride where you would need to change out the sump, has only happened to me twice ,ever, one being a couple of months ago but i was not in the situation where i had to drain my DT to do it,very fortunate i guess, maybe one end of the stand can be made removable

I was thinking that but don't want to degrade the look of the stand too much, I'm sure I could figure a way though, maybe I have to consider that a little more.

you def. want room to work around and in the sump,

just my opinion

I would use it, it's pretty common to have to put the sump through the top on store built stands. Leak test it and you'll be good, my sump is acrylic and I love it, no worries about cracking a small glass tank inside your stand.

Can you add a 2 piece's of hose, 1 from the tank line to the sump which goes to a pall then a spare pump if you have it and connect it to the return hose to the tank ? This might work temporarily until you get it drained and patched!
Good luck

I haven't run into the problem yet of needing it removed, the problem is should I install it. The tank isn't set up yet, i'm in the process of stating the build.

Ya I'm starting to lean towards just using it as is, the only other option I see is cutting a big door on the side of the stand and not really fond of that idea, the panel can't really be taken out.

my acrylic sump is right inside my stand    …goes thru the front doors  ..i have to drain the sump and unhook all plumbing and wiggle it towards the front doors and tilt it as the skimmer is taller then my doors ….but my next stand will be a 4 post  with the all four panels coming off  either with screws or magnets

So on a side note: I've been searching and searching online to find somewhere locally (KW) that has IPS weldon 16 and 3 so I can fix hole and crack in the sump tomorrow with no luck, anyone know where I could get this?

The issue arises as a what if scenario more then anything aka Murphy's law. What if a rock or pump is dropped or placed down too hard, or for some other reason a crack happens (and yours already has a repaired crack), or a seam goes. What if you upgrade for new equipment or for some reason decide to change your sump (as many of us have done several times in the past). Can you imagine having to destroy your DT all because a crack appeared in your sump. Or not being able to ever change anything in your sump because you are limited to the dimensions and design of the current sump.

My sump does not fit through the front doors of my stand either, I cut a door into the side of my stand so that I could remove it that way if needed.

But it's a big sump, not small, if anything you may want to redesign the sump, so you drain the sump and make repairs, why would you have to bother with the display, I would prefer to not put the sump under the stand but rather behind the tank or in the basement but that may not be feasible.

Figured out a way, I'll be removing the back centre brace and be replacing it with 2 at about the 1/3 and 2/3 mark. Then bracing the top like a door frame to hold the centre of the tank. I will be able to push the sump in from the front and have it swing over the back to fit as long as I leave enough room behind the stand.
