Probably best to keep this as a Heatloss/retention thread, not political/hydro rates complaint.

I agree with @thehvacman. Get a temp check in that basement. Temps that low will be extremely difficult to keep raised. Insulating, wrapping and adding a hood will definitely help. Those LEDs heat will be kept in the hood helping as well. Even a few degrees difference really affects the water evap rate. I run my tank at 78 and I go through about 15 gallons a week. If I go up to 80, I almost double my evap.

The idea behind a lifebreath unit is to exhaust and replace with outside air. All thats going to do to your tank in the winter is cause your evaporation to go up on the tank. It will also cool the house even more.

Actually the are heat recovery units so the heat/cool loss is minimal and the ventilation is very beneficial, they also remove humidity.

Couple of things.....the people with lower hydro bills...do you have "smart meters" yet? Our hydro bill tripled when ours was installed....Hydro's response is that the old mechanical meter must have been under-charging us for years...(probably true)....remember the previous generation...boomers...lived in a time of subsidized utilities and deficit financing that they would pay for once they were well off, but instead the bill has been passed on to succeeding generations.

Secondly, on the political front.....Spread the love around...Wynn subsidized the windmills and solar panels (greenie folly at its worst) but it was Mike Harris that managed to convince "the common sense revolution" that selling Hydro to an outside corporation, adding a for profit middleman to the equation, would make it cheaper! (Anyone who believed that clearly lacked common sense)....oh then we'll get the lost revenue back in taxes...except they are a multinational that pays their taxes to Britain....

I installed an hrv a few years back due to how bad my windows sweat, it makes a huge difference and heat loss is pretty minimal. I wasn't familiar with the lifebreath brand. definitely would recommend having one. Pretty sure they are standard on new homes now.

yeah depends what kind of house you have also, newer houses are airtight and dont "bleed" humidity like older ones. Ya they definately remove humidity from the space, but that also causes your tank to evaporate more. If your goal is to stop condensation on your windows than its a good choice, but when you are exchanging even with HRV you wont get perfect transfer and will be bringing in cooler air than going out. You are probably right about them being more efficient than they used to be.

Be careful buying a used lifebreath, they had issues with catching on fire and did a massive recall.

I am a HVAC mechanic in case you hadn't guessed lol

For efficiency...use all internal pumps so all of the energy they loose as heat is used productively. (If you need the heat you hit near 100% efficiency) and for some really cool Tech (though likely not worth it) run liquid cooling lines through your led heat sinks and use the sump as your heat exchange site.

No matter what happens to gas rates the hot water heat is a must do great design by @Pistol.

I think the lifebreath things are heat reclimation gadgets, no idea how they would help with condensation.

Tank went up 2 degrees overnight, so skin helped! It's running at 77.5 and heaters actually turned off for short periods. I think if I can get some sort of door for the top, and get all the pumps etc running it will be no problem keeping temp up now.

The media is liberal biased, the libs will put a different figurehead in wynnes place (probably have to force her aside), and try to run as a "whole new platform" just like mcsquinty. Conservatives had best not come out and say things like "going to cut 100,000 needless redundant government positions" next time. Just pull a wynne and say you won't and do it anyway :)

Were on a smart meter. Their are known issues with the smart meters not working correctly and over billing too. and lets not mention some of the fire's they have caused...... but the hydro companies wont admit ito_O

Lol, plus anyone even thinking of blaming harris for our current hydro issues might as well just blame William Hurst, that guy was up to no good...

...and Torx, when did you start working for the wynne government? ;)

for us as residential users it sucks, we have to cut back on something else to make it work, but we can still make it work.
The more alarming part is the businesses. Where i work, the bill has gone from 40,000$ a year in 2014, to 85,000.00$ in 2016.
Ive talk to several other companies as well, if it goes up any more, they are simply shutting the doors.

to break it down for wynne

closing business= less jobs= more people not being able to pay their taxes=more of burden on welfare and unemployment = economic collapse

I mean i figured that out on my own and i cant even tie my own shoes.... how are these people in charge of our province...
SMDH.
