Maxspect has MELTED?!?!

I have noticed recently that one of my max spects is looking somewhat "off" The sides didn't match even though they were on the same preset (preset #2). I was installing my tunze wavebox today and tinkering with the wave pattern when I noticed a mark on my maxspect! It looks like it has pretty much melted away?!?!? I look over to my other unit and it is doing the same thing!!! They are both maxspect razr 16k 160 watt units. What has happened?!?!?

The one that was looking "off"

The other one that was still working good:

Better shots after I uninstalled them from my canopy. I am kind of screwed as I have no back up lighting for my corals.... Not quite what I expected from a 500 dollar fixture. Especially times two. From what I have researched this seems to be an issue that they know about???

That's a huge design flaw, what's in the casing at that point?  Looks like plastic wasn't the material to use there.

Is there warranty?  I'd be calling whoever sold them to you asap.

I have done some sniffing around, looks like maxspect knows about this. I'm gonna have to talk to Bill tomorrow and see what he can do for me. I can't go more than a few days as I don't really have a full set of lighting without these guys....

Tony,

I don't know much about the max spect fixtures but are they CSA or ULC approved?
If they are then I would be calling them or ESA to report this immediately as these lights are a major hazard to anyone who is using them.

I was just on their website and didnt see any mention of approval....tried to dl the product manual but didnt work on my phone.....maybe it says in there.....

I wouldn't worry, I'm sure replacements are sitting at the shop as we speak  ;) a quick Google is showing most guys aren't that lucky tho..

Whatever you do, don't use them till they fixed/replaced.

If this is a known issue why hasn't there been a recall on them?

Yikes!!!! Not good. Get the supplier on it ASAP and see if they have a loaner fixture for you and have those units replaced.

Ask for a refund and we'll build you a nice DIY set that doesn't set your house on fire.  I looked at the pic, man that's bad considering it's the same on both units.

Someone else posted about having these lights as well on here.

The issues seem isolated to a batch of the 160 watt maxspects. They had a batch of mislabeled parts that were not rated for the power hence the melting.

That being said, how much time can I go without lights over my tank? How long do I have?

Hell, for the price you pay for those things the parties involved should in the very least arrange a loan lighting system for you...

Heard of a lot of recommendations to never exceed 3 days, 2 to be safe. I am sure there is someone in london area who can give you a loaner...

Tony, I have 2x 2lamp vapour tight t5ho fixtures you can throw on top of your tank. The bulbs are old but better than nothing. PM me if interested.

Edit: they are cUL listed :)

Edit 2: you have a top on your canopy, no? Take that off, and stuff will run much much cooler
