10k is pretty common price actually..... Price can vary greatly with the make of generator also.... You are going to pay probably 3-4x more for Honda than generac. An ATS (automatic transfer switch) costs about $1000 also....actually when I looked at them a few years it would cost approx $1100 for ATS from suppliers....I have heard though that they have come down a little bit....not much. As an electrician, it would still cost me probably 7k to fully install an generac generator with ATS at my home.....this is no labour and parts at cost. ESA and hydro would likely make me move my meter too....and if I did it then I would put my service underground from transformer pole to my meter base....it's overhead now....which again would cost more. What I am saying is that if I did this and was forced to move my meter then I could even be paying 10k to install myself. I really wanted a hando generator though..... So I bought a small one that I can just run a cord to plug in my tank and the my sump pump, fridge, etc....
I don't need to worry about heating or hot water without power so that cuts back on the generator load too. I figured for the $799 for a small honda and the actual amount someone uses their generator and the fact that my tank/house can sit for a couple hours without power (does not need immediate power recovery) that was the best route for me. Don't get me wrong, a full house backup with ATS would be amazing but at 7-8x more the price and no Honda Motor (love those gx motors, even if they did move production from japan to china lol) it just wasn't worth it IMO for me anyways. Oh, and I would like to point out that IME as an electrician, things break and fail, yes that includes the almighty ATS lol. Actually I had to go over to a friends house that had a manual transfer generator panel installed and remove the cover and fix the interlock on it because it was so seized up that he couldn't even manually transfer it over lol.
