Storm Aftermath

10k is pretty common price actually..... Price can vary greatly with the make of generator also.... You are going to pay probably 3-4x more for Honda than generac. An ATS (automatic transfer switch) costs about $1000 also....actually when I looked at them a few years it would cost approx $1100 for ATS from suppliers....I have heard though that they have come down a little bit....not much. As an electrician, it would still cost me probably 7k to fully install an generac generator with ATS at my home.....this is no labour and parts at cost. ESA and hydro would likely make me move my meter too....and if I did it then I would put my service underground from transformer pole to my meter base....it's overhead now....which again would cost more. What I am saying is that if I did this and was forced to move my meter then I could even be paying 10k to install myself. I really wanted a hando generator though..... So I bought a small one that I can just run a cord to plug in my tank and the my sump pump, fridge, etc....
I don't need to worry about heating or hot water without power so that cuts back on the generator load too. I figured for the $799 for a small honda and the actual amount someone uses their generator and the fact that my tank/house can sit for a couple hours without power (does not need immediate power recovery) that was the best route for me. Don't get me wrong, a full house backup with ATS would be amazing but at 7-8x more the price and no Honda Motor (love those gx motors, even if they did move production from japan to china lol) it just wasn't worth it IMO for me anyways. Oh, and I would like to point out that IME as an electrician, things break and fail, yes that includes the almighty ATS lol. Actually I had to go over to a friends house that had a manual transfer generator panel installed and remove the cover and fix the interlock on it because it was so seized up that he couldn't even manually transfer it over lol.

All well written and great info that I was actually starting to ponder myself. Thank you.

All but one note...

Forced Air Gas Furnaces still need hydro to run the circulation fans, thermostat etc.

I have a 52,000 btu gas fireplace in the basement..... No power is required to run it....it has a small 120v variable speed fan installed on it like a lot of people do and this just won't run.... I have heated the house a few times in the winter using only the fireplace and no fan running on it.....downstairs is hotter than upstairs but works well enough for power outages.
Remote control for our fireplace is all battery power too....remote and receiver....only crappy part about the receiver is that it takes 4 AA batteries and they need replaced often if using often......remote is a fire genie and I have heard countless complaints because of this issue....maybe it's better now, who knows!

So, yes I cannot run our furnace without power..... I'm sure if it came down to it and I had to use the furnace (having just the blower fan on is nice, we run ours 24/7) then I could likely conjure something up quick and safe to make it work because it's only 120v and the disconnect switch is surface mounted exposed beside the unit....15 mins, furnace up and running off genny ;)

Oh, now that is a set up. My mother always had gas fireplaces on every floor. But she always had cheap/free installation because she was a big wig at Union Gas. LoL.

So next power outage...lets all go to Reef Heros :D

PARTY!! :)

For me it was key to have atleast 1 fireplace in the basement because it is living space for us and my tank.

Great explanation Reef Hero, thanks for that, for most of us having the back up generator will be a life saver and at a much more manageable cost !
great thread, great ideas !

I have had a generator since 1997, and ran it twice for the tanks.
Ran it in 2001 during ice storm for 3.5 days straight, I was exhausted but it saved my bacon.(and my tanks)

Coleman 6.5 HP w/ briggs and Stratton engine, I do pull it out once a year to fire it up and make sure its always good to go.
Always make sure you have a jerry can full o gas as well. ;)

Woodstock was out for awhile in some parts of town, not us though, Got some old Reef pals in Toronto who were hit pretty hard, They were wrapping their tanks in blankets and up all night stirring their tanks, They weren't prepared, Some fish were lost.  I'll get a back up battery for my MP40
