Is the 15gal or the 36" tank drilled?
If not you're going to have to either drill one of them or use an external overflow box. You can have two separate sumps like what you're describing. But a overflow is what you'll need to one of them can "spill" into the other one with the return pump in it.

Or stick with the 36" tank and just make due. Design it correctly and factor in all your equipment you're planning on having in there and maximize the space. It can be done. Just like everything else in this hobby. Bigger is usually better.

ok ,... Thanks Eric for your time and everyone else on this matter ...

for saving space i was thinking of raising the skimmer up on a pvc stand ... and putting rocks at the bottum in the skimmer area ... in the middle using that as the ref and the far end as the return

20150709_195328.jpg full sump
20150709_195343.jpg fuge section far left
20150709_195356.jpg equipment section middle has skimmer media reactor and return pump
20150709_195405.jpg my overflow drain runs through my algae scrubber

After that it falls through bio balls over a baffle into my equipment section. My media reactor exits into my fuge to keep it flowing then under the bottom of a peice of plexi i used for a divider and just on the other side underneath my media reactor is where my return pump is and how its positioned it actually draws the water from the fuge section.... hope that helps tickle your brain....

And i couldnt drill my tank thats all tempered so i have an overflow box. Only kind i use are aqueon. I find they are well built, quiet and most importantly reliable.

is that the one that you are going to use? is it 2 or 3 chamber and where are you going to put your skimmer.. when I did the 125, we had to cut the center bracing to fit the skimmer in..

Here's an out of the box thought. I run an external skimmer. It foamed out the other day because I forgot to wash new filter socks I bought. Guess what. Water circulated in the skimmer and no overflow.

Look up Lifereef. You can run them internal or external with whatever pump you want in other words, it will never be obsolete. Mines a beast and takes care of my 350 gallon system no problem. A 24" will do you just fine and be a far longer term investment than some bubble wheel skimmer that will have you replace it when they change the pump fittings.
