Here's an out of the box thought. I run an external skimmer. It foamed out the other day because I forgot to wash new filter socks I bought. Guess what. Water circulated in the skimmer and no overflow.
Look up Lifereef. You can run them internal or external with whatever pump you want in other words, it will never be obsolete. Mines a beast and takes care of my 350 gallon system no problem. A 24" will do you just fine and be a far longer term investment than some bubble wheel skimmer that will have you replace it when they change the pump fittings.
Although I have good faith in your skimmer, isn't it a bit early to say it handles your system just fine?
I'm not sure why pump fittings would need to be changed on a needle wheel skimmer either.
