Here's an out of the box thought. I run an external skimmer. It foamed out the other day because I forgot to wash new filter socks I bought. Guess what. Water circulated in the skimmer and no overflow.

Look up Lifereef. You can run them internal or external with whatever pump you want in other words, it will never be obsolete. Mines a beast and takes care of my 350 gallon system no problem. A 24" will do you just fine and be a far longer term investment than some bubble wheel skimmer that will have you replace it when they change the pump fittings.

Although I have good faith in your skimmer, isn't it a bit early to say it handles your system just fine?

I'm not sure why pump fittings would need to be changed on a needle wheel skimmer either.

On a needle wheel the manufacturers change either the pump, which means replacements aren't available and your skimmer is scrap unless you can rig up a connection, or they change the connection on the pump meaning it won't work with your skimmer.

I'm pretty certain that a 36" tall Venturi skimmer powered by an iwaki 55 RLT is going to be handle a 350 gallon system with 12 fish.

You don't think so jerry? I bet I could put 150 fish in there no problem. Skimmer would be rockin...

I agree, the pump on my reef octopus when for a crap, contacted supplier and was told that this was the pump needed. Ordered paid extra for overnight and low and behold, didn't fit.. first off, the union was 1/2" my skimmer is 3/4", secondly, the venturi on the skimmer was too big and the venturi that came with the pump only had a 1/2" hose.. so, if anyone needs to know how to niger rig just let me know..been there and done that.. I guess maybe they were hoping that I would just buy a new skimmer...

I never said I was doubting your skimmer, just stating that its only been running for less then a month..some would even say not broken in yet. Im sure you could put more fish then 12 in as well.

I have never ran into an issue myself with a skimmer pump needing to be retrofitted to a skimmer body, and I do understand that pumps do need to be replaced sometimes. The changing of pipe connections to skimmer body is the specific manufacturer, not just "needle wheel skimmers" in general.
