So today my son and I built his turtles new condo complex. He is leaving for university British Columbia in a month and his turtle didn't get accepted so I get to babysit it for a few years, at least. He is currently in a 55gal So I got a 72gal for his swim tank, and I took an old 55 I had laid down on its side and popped off one of the big sides. That will be for his dry area. I then will use a 20 gal underneath for a sump filter using a wet/dry with sponges, still need to fabricate this part. So today was basically just building the 3 teir 4x4 stand to hold all the boxes.

How old is the turt? Is it a red eared slider? I have a pair of 18 or 19 year old RES turtles and they are so much fun to watch. Such interesting personalities. I had to split them up a few years ago because the 120G I had them in just wasn't big enough.. so my one girl got her own 100G rubbermade stocktank and the other girl stayed in the 120G with about a dozen cichlids and a few other fish she doesn't seem to pay attention to.

Your build looks great! I can't wait to see your progress on it!! Building the equipments I think is just as much fun as watching the critters down the road.

Hope you got decent sized gravel as they tend to eat the stuff lol. Our turtle was crapping out pink gravel for months after we went with a bottomless tank haha. It is not bad theoretically for them to eat it as it does help with their digestive system but there is the chance that they can swallow a piece that is too large to digest which can cause issues. There is also the possibility of compacting if it can't pass or sharp edges working there way through the digestive system... As turtles are constantly on the lookout for food they tend to eat and nip at anything that looks like it could potentially edable.

Of course people still use gravel in turtle tanks and their turtles live long and happy lives, I am just sharing my two cents :) :) ;)

I did get two bags of the biggest stuff I could find today, but I do want more of a river rock look to the bottom so I might need to go to a landscaper to get a bucket full of that instead

Think I need a log of drift wood for him ?
Still might need to change the height between the two tanks as well but will see if he figures it out today or not.
