Muriatic acid. Kill it all. Begin again.

There are way too many risks in using other people's rock "live". Here's a partial list

Majano anemone
Aptaisia
AEFW
Bubble algae
Gelidium
Nudibranch
Predatory crabs
Mantis shrimp
Predatory worms
Ich
Velvet
High PO4
Flatworms
Etc etc

Say it with me

Acid
Bath

i'm not actually shopping for live rock but thinking of selling my system... my rocks are mostly covered with softies and it would be a shame to acid bath them but I wondered if theres any market for them and what to value them at. I would sell the rocks first.
As much as I like my tank I just find its something else that takes my time and some days I feel my time would be better spent on other things.
Not for sure yet, just considering it.

Ya most times they can be removed fairly easily, what kind of zoas/softies do you have? I can bring some tools over and help you out. I'm just in Strathroy.

Why do you want to kill it?
It will take time to get a new life there. So about 1-2 year you will wait until coraline algae will come...
worms other nice bugs.
It called balance: when worms eat leftovers of food, algae utilize nitrates, bugs eat algae.
The good system is balanced system not a sterile system.

Actually fish is eating algae as well:

thats why i pay the same for live or dead rock,i nuke everything, ill try to say any corals i can but otherwise its all start fresh, not worth the trouble otherwise,i see you asking us to trust your rock for sale? i dont see any close up pics, youve been on here almost 2 yrs and i cant find a build thread but that coulld be me
i stopped long ago putting anything in my tank unless im most certain of whom i getting it from, and anything live hits a quarantine.so much time fighting unwanted treasures over the years, best play it safe and nuke it IMO
reefer keeper has the right idea, and pays more than i would lol

I appreciate the feed back from my post. I couldn't have had the success I've had with my tank without this group. allot of knowledge here that is invaluable. Water change night for example is something I sometimes procrastinate and dread or if I have an issue that requires a huge time investment then its those days that the tank is not fun, but I also like the challenge. I haven't decided as of yet if I am selling my system. At times I feel life is too busy with my business, family, etc and if I can simplify my life in small ways then I sometimes need to concider those options, but not ready to let go just yet... :)

That's a big decision to shut down your tank... certainly not a decision to be made lightly... good luck:)

I was in the same position 5 years ago with my 55 gal fresh water tank. Self employed, kids, service clubs & volunteering, un-supportive wife. Sold everything to a friend of a friend. After 2 years missed it, after 3 years wanted it back, 4 years I started researching salt water, at 5 years I'm moving forward to salt water, full steam ahead. I think it gets in your blood, and... well... like everyone else sais,,,, We're addicted.

Think of it like dog people. Dogs are great as friends and companions, but do you want to bend over and pick IT up? That's why I have cats. Every pet has positives and negatives. Enjoy the positives, and the negatives is the cost of the positives. At least with fish they don't have vet fees.
