There seems to be a major push by a lot of vendors with AF Reef Salt.

Personally, I have seen and have had great success with less expensive brands namely Instant Ocean and even the Kent brand. I do not see the need to buy these premium brands of salt unless you want to experiment and try something different.

Sure the Alkalinity, Calcium, etc might be higher or lower among the various brands, but as long as you know what your working with, you can have success either way. Proof is to just look back to DVs tank that was truly amazing, he used IO religiously and achieved TOTM across various websites over many years.

Since you have it narrowed down to 2 and you have your reasons, I would have to say to go with the Aquaforest simply because it is a Fully synthetic. I have not used either but at least the AF starts with a purer base. AF has been out longer in Europe and I have seen some photos of the European Tanks using the AF system and they are impressive.

Just Started a H2Oceans bucket that I picked up when That store in KW was still around I have used it for a couple water changes but who knows how it will work out. I have read before that all the salt mixes are very similar when they have been tested independently. But this was a few years ago. I would be very interested in hearing why one salt mix is better than the next? other than price or availability.

I am also thinking of switching to Aquaforest as my test results from using Fauna Marin salt is not coming up as per the manufacture's specs

Really? I would think at that price it should be perfect

Let's say I bought two different test kits, and buying a third and fourth one recently to validate the results. Spent too much time than I should be spending on testing using different test kits on freshly made saltwater.

You need a $600 Plus IDIP to test your stuff :)

We discussed this in another thread not too long ago I believe. I just tested with new test kits (salifert, and Hanna for Alk), and all came out as indicated on the box. I have to imagine they are from the same batch you have, so I have no real explanation for you unfortunately. As mentioned at the time, if you had concerns, you certainly should have and hope you did bring them up to Dave or Darren. Baring that, the owner of FM, is fairly accessible via email.

I have not used AF, but for everyone touting it, especially with "evidence" from Europe, there is equal amounts of that evidence coming out of Europe with the FM.

I can tell you this. I do not profess to know a great deal about salt, and how one is better, IF one is better, BUT I do know more than my fair share of sales, and marketing, and to that end, general business. Don't kid yourself people, you are seeing a ton of stores carrying the AF now for a reason, and it's not because it is better. That company is a marketing company first, and a manufacturer of products second. Profit is what is driving this machine, simple as that. So my thought process goes this way. If this stuff is actually coming from Europe, how have they managed to get it here for half the money of other overseas manufacturers. Answer is obvious, they can't. Now if it is a 3rd the price to buy at a cost level, then there is your answer. Margin, margin margin. I give them credit on their branding however, it is phenomenal.

I have to say I am inclined to agree with you. Is marketing the reason behind the success of Aquaphor salt? Personally I think it is a good portion of it but are high and salt like fauna Marin Worth twice as much? That's where I have a hard time with it.
