I've said it many times in the past, and I'll say it again!

Choose the salt that's easiest you can get and the best you can afford.

I've kept many, MANY successful reef tanks running the cheapest salts out there. @Kman can vouch for this as he's done the same.

Sony Xperia Z3

I'm with Eric on this topic. I've seen many beautiful tanks using different salts. Get whatever is available and affordable. There are so many variables in our hobby that can change the look and health of our tanks that have a way bigger impact then the differences between the salts. Just a simple example: Doesn't matter what kind of salt you use if your lights are crap.

Just for reference, here is an article about testing different salts. You may need to Google translate as it is from Poland, the same country where AF is made.

I have also kept many successful reef systems both personally and through our many clients that we service using numerous different salts. As long as you test and no where your salts parameters are and dose accordingly you will be ok. That being said, the best salts I have personally used are Salinity and Aquaforest. We have just recently switched all our customers tanks over to Aquaforest and are very happy with the results!

How quickly would you go through one of those large containers of fresh saltwater bigshow? I have found that D&D didn't leave any nasties when mixed up, but maybe this was because I used it right away or within 24 hours. As far as consistency...well I never really checked for it and just made sure the salt was at correct salinity before using, I never did huge water changes so parameters were never a huge issue for me.

I have used D&D and RSCP, and found them to leave the same residue Nasty nasty. I have a 50G container, and unless I am doing a large single change, that will typically have water sitting in it for about 2 weeks as I change out 3.5G daily. I am now on my 6th box of FM, and I can say that I have not seen any of the same sludge.

Skim made an interesting comment about his particular brand of salt taking less volume to mix the same 1.026. What I am wondering is, what is all the white stuff, are other brands using a filler?

One would think that with salt being the single largest ingredient, I assume, that all brands would need a similar volume to mix up 1.026.

Interesting, can anyone shed some light on this?

I love salinity...been using it for about 5 years..I have no experience with the two brands you mentioned though...with every other salt I have tried I get differing results ranging from wacky parameters to nasty slimey bucket...with salinity I get none of the above, pretty much perfect parameters (as described on the box anyway) which are exactly what I am looking for...it mixes very fast with zero residue...also in the five years I have been using this single bucket of salt it has never once clumped up...as mentioned the lids are awesome, I do have a garlic sock bag in the bucket full of rice though...also as all buckets I have ever used I always suggest mixing the heck out of the dry salt prior to mixing it, unless you use the whole pail at once as that will minimize some of the wacky parameters...

The kijiji ad is for the London area. I believe this is one of @unibob s ads for Bean Bag Frags.

I have ad reef salt available in Waterloo if anyone local is interested. I'll have to double check my costs and let everyone know the price.
