My understanding is that you can increase Alk without affecting Ph too much if needed. This is the reason vendors sell both Baking Soda (to raise Alk) and Soda Ash (to raise both Alk and Ph) for 2 part dosing. I think most people use Soda Ash to raise both Alk and Ph.

Thanks! I enjoyed it very much. It makes me re-think about carbon dosing.

Unfortunately, the explanation about Ph vs Alk was somewhat limited. It explains in an easy way how Alk works as a "buffer" when Ph is lowered unexpectedly.
