i think it looks AWESOME!, but i have a bad feeling your going to regret your design, :(
judging by the pics, you dont have a whole lot of room to get your hand into the tank their... to rearrange corals, rocks, etc etc, which most reefers do on a daily basis, yea sure, you can take the whole top off, but that also looks like quite abit of work... i dunno, if it was me i prob wouldnt like it, but i hope you have a different mindset then me because it does look amazing!

Understood poseidon. I realize that access daily may become an issue. The canopy half weighs about 30 lbs which is not too big an ordeal for me. There were not many options when it came to design which will become apparant when you see it mounted. I have enough dedication to make it work, trust me.

Been a busy June and not with regards to the setup. Thought I would post what I have accomplished this month;
Canopy is finished and installed and brand spanking new custom sump arrived (care of JT Custom Acrylics).
Next goal will be the completion of the led lighting system.

And now for the pics.
Canopy Installed..snazzy.

New Sump Arrived, thanks JT Custom Acrylics. Will need to get a piece of insulating foam for under this monster sump.

Had to test fit skimmer, everything fits as planned with one exception...the sump lol

A quick explanation of the flow directions, two inputs, one output.

Cheers

Uh-oh, what didnt fit? Looks good in there! How was the drive home with the hatch tied down?

JT, if you look at the 2x6 at the top of the length shots you will see I had to notch them in order to turn the sump from its side to rest on its bottom. My calculation about how much rotational space would be required was off by an inch. Otherwise its a perfect fit and the sump itself is flawless. Thanks again!

On another note I was wondering if anyone here has ever plumbed their corner overflows into one (ie drill each overflow box and join them at the base to turn them into one overflow)? The reason that I am considering this is that I would like to run a modified bean animal in the overflow and this would allow me to do so (at least in theory).

Pic of what I am proposing.

Hope that makes sense.

This is incredible! Love the way your stand turned out, and the see through cutout wall at the back is brilliant.

You dont have room to run returns over the back?

So one overflow has a siphon drain and a return, the other has a trickle and a return?
You might have a level differential due to pressure drop in the burried pipe. Otherwise its a pretty interesting idea.

What I am actually toying with is the idea of connecting the two corner overflows via a channel buried below the sandbed. By doing this only one siphon should work ala bean animal system as the overflow would pull the extra water needed to maintain the full siphon through the channel. With that in place I have a hole for the emergency siphon line, the trickle and the return. I just need to source some pvc channel that has a cross sectional area greater than that of the 1" siphon line. Its either that or I stick with the dursos.

Let me know what you think.

I understand what you are trying to do. Definitely do not go with the double durso system that comes with the tank. It is noisy. Your idea will definitely work.. just make sure that the pipe between the overflows never gets plugged.
In mine, i run a siphon and a durso in each overflow, and run the returns over the back. You could probably hide them in the wall. In my opinion, my setup is essentially the same as a beananimal... I just have 2 dursos instead of an emergency.

Just dropped by my local pool company and received 20ft of Tigerflex 1" pvc at 2.69/ft. I never imagined this stuff would be as flexible as it is, I can literally coil it around my arm as I would do with an extension cord or central vac line. Goodbye rigid schedule 40/80 hello tigerflex.

Babies on the way so not a whole lot of progress. Rock is cooking, will be posting some of my old tanks in the classifieds shortly. Going a little stir crazy not having fish in this tank.

Had time to grab some assorted shots of the progress so far.
First up: shot of the space under the stairs RO system running (minus the DI resin) Doesn't look like much but will eventually include chemical dosing stations, apex base station and lighting control. Hidden away out of sight.

Second up: Rock cooking 55 gallon drum full o' Marco dry rock (pm me if anyone would like to get rid of a pound or two of aged, pest free rock).
IMGP2118-1.jpg

Last up: Split a 3" abs tube lengthways to allow me to connect the two overflows. Will be using a dremmel to cut out the bottom of the overflow towers and then siliconing this to the bottom to create a watertight passage way across the bottom of the tank. Sand will cover this (or so is my hope) making it unnoticeable. Question about the 'dwv' has me paused for the moment as that means 'drain, waste or vent' uses only. Should I be concerned about this? If so I'll just have to find some large diameter pvc to do the same to. I've checked out a few forums and it seems that dwv abs has mixed comments. Some say they have used it for years with no problems, others say stay away at all costs. Let me know what you think.
